At 11.51am on 23rd February we joined the Carretera Austral, the fabled dirt road down through Chile. This marks the beginning of another section of our travels, with only Tierra del Fuego to follow (This being an actual island right at the end of the world) and then our 'exit strategy', whatever that may end up being.....
So there is a sense of nearing the end of the trail. Fortunately the scenery is making up for it somewhat.
Construction has already begun on the infrastructure for the series of hydroelectric dams that will run down this section of Chile. So if you intend to travel this fabled road I would do it very soon - or in 20 years time when nature has adapted once again to man's handiwork.
It's only the hairs on a gooseberry, that stops it from being a grape.
